Catawba Valley Community College Volleyball, who finished 35-2 overall this past season, as Region X and District P Champions, looks to dominate the Region X Conference again in 2013 by returning 5 powerhouse athletes and by signing an athletic, talented freshman class. Returning for the Lady Bucs is outside hitter, Leah Wells who averaged 2.38 kills per set with 286 total kills for the season. Leah also had 409 digs for the year. Also returning is middle hitter, Cecilia Brandon who led the team in hitting percentage with an average of .318 for the season with 213 total kills. Ceci also had 78 blocks for the season. Libero Hannah Lewis will return as well. She boasts an amazing 647 digs for the year along with 50 service aces. Megan Gouge, the 6’2” right-side hitter is looking forward to next season as well. She averaged almost 1 kill per set and had 60 total blocks for the year. Savannah Dellinger, serving specialist and outside hitter, is another returner. Savannah lead the team in aces per set with .55, and had 66 total aces for the season. She also contributed 82 digs and 29 kills last year. The Bucs have signed 4 freshmen recently (see below) and look to add several more to the roster by the end of January.
The Lady Bucs will hold Open Gym on Saturday, January 5, 2013 from 1:00-3:00.
South Caldwell’s – Kaley Binegar
Kaley Binegar of South Caldwell High School in Granite Falls, NC, signed on November 13th, 2012 to play volleyball next fall at Catawba Valley Community College. Present for the signing was South Caldwell Head Coach Vicky Reising and Assistant Coach, Kaley’s parents Kim and RB Binegar, South Caldwell Athletic Director Jeff Parham, CVCC Assistant Coach Mark Wimberley and CVCC Head Coach Shannon Hudson.
Kaley helped lead the South Caldwell Spartans to a winning season and the third round of the State Play-Offs. Kaley was named Best Offensive Player twice and was also team captain. She received All-County Setter, was named to the All-Conference Team and received the Leadership Award as well.
CVCC Head Coach Shannon Hudson is excited to add Kaley to the Lady Buccaneer’s line-up for the fall 2013 season. “Kaley plays the game with so much enthusiasm and energy. Her quickness and defensive game make Kaley a huge asset to our program.”
Kaley is planning to pursue a Nursing degree and is a member of the NC Scholars.
Tiffany Brooks – South Rowan
South Rowan High School standout Tiffany Brooks signed on December 7, 2012 to play volleyball next fall for the Lady Buccaneers of Catawba Valley Community College. Tiffany’s mom Deanna Brooks as well as Head Coach Jan Dowling were present for the signing along with CVCC Assistant Coach Mark Wimberley and CVCC Head Coach Shannon Hudson.
Tiffany was All-County, All-Conference and MVP for her South Rowan High School located in China Grove, NC. Tiffany is a versatile player, having played outside hitter, middle hitter, right-side and defensive specialist during her 4 years on varsity for her team. She is also an accomplished pole-vaulter.
Coach Hudson comments, “Tiffany is a smart, versatile player who will bring experience and athleticism to our roster this fall. I am looking forward to having Tiffany on the team and utilizing her vast range of volleyball talents.”
Tiffany plans to study Dental Hygiene at CVCC.
Brittani Cartner – North Iredell
Brittani Cartner of North Iredell High School in Olin, NC signed on December 17, 2012 to play next fall for the Nationally Ranked Catawba Valley Lady Bucs Volleyball program. With Brittani at the signing were dad and mom, Craig and Wanda Cartner, North Iredell High School Athletic Director Nick Tomlin, NIHS Principal Teresa Evans, NIHS Head Coach Natalie Tribble, CVCC Assistant Coach Mark Wimberley and CVCC Head Coach Shannnon Hudson. Also there to offer congratulations was former team-mate and North Iredell graduate Leah Wells, who will be a sophomore this year on the CVCC squad.
Among Brittani’s athletic accomplishments are All-Conference and All-County for Volleyball and Basketball. Brittani helped lead her team to another winning volleyball season finishing 21-1. Brittani excels athletically and in the classroom making A/B Honor roll and as a member of the PATH Club.
CVCC Head Coach Shannon Hudson remarks, “I am so excited to add Brittani to our line-up for next fall. She is fundamentally sound and has a powerful, consistent swing from the outside attack and right-side as well. Brittani loves to play the game and it shows in her hustle and competitive drive.”
Brittani plans to pursue an Associate in Arts degree from CVCC before transferring to a 4-year institution.
Anna Henderson of Newton, NC
Anna Henderson, a home-schooled student from Newton, NC, signed on December 21, 2012 to play volleyball next fall for the Catawba Valley Community College Lady Buccaneer’s Volleyball team. Anna was surrounded by family and friends, including mom, Donna Henderson, brothers Anthony and Nate, Club Coach Hannah Reynolds, CVCC Assistant Coach Mark Wimberley and CVCC Head Coach Shannon Hudson as she made her commitment to CVCC official.
Anna played high school volleyball for Family Christian Academy and played club volleyball for Carolina Crush. Coach Hudson comments, “Anna is such an athletic, quick player who will continue to learn and develop her game as she becomes more involved with the sport. Anna’s leaping ability and reach make her a defensive weapon on the net and her eagerness to progress and improve her game are tremendous assets that every coach loves to see! I look for Anna to have lots of success as a student-athlete at CVCC.”
Anna plans to pursue a career in Criminal Justice.
CVCC Volleyball will have OPEN GYM this SATURDAY, January 5th from 1:00 until 3:00, in the Tarlton Complex (formerly Multi-purpose Complex) on their main campus in Hickory, NC.
