Women’s Basketball Wins at Guilford Tech

The Buccaneers Women’s basketball team locked up at least a share of the the Carolinas-Virignina Conference Regular season championship with a 69-55 win over Guilford Tech last night. The Bucs were led by Anika Jones who dropped 18 points and grabbed 7 rebounds while fellow freshman Kadesha Gibbs added 13 points and 8 rebounds. Sophomore Matrice Sweezy and Samiya Pitts each added 12 points. Sweezy dished out 6 assists in the winning effort.

The Bucs led by 9 points going into the half and maintained their lead through out the second half. This win puts CVCC at 27-0 and 13-0 in conference. The Bucs will conclude their season at #9 Louisburg in a game that will decide the conference and tournament seeding on Saturday at 1:00pm.

Men’s Basketball Blows Out Belmont Abbey 115-67

The Buccaneers men’s basketball team traveled down to Charlotte to play Belmont Abbey to play their JV team in a game that was rescheduled from February 17th. The Bucs offense exploded on the season posting their highest point total of the year scoring 115 points while their defense held tight and only allowed the Belmont Abbey team to post 67.

The Bucs were led by sophomore Terrence Polk and freshman Josh McClain who each posted 22 points. Sophomore Jalen Cannady and Isaiah Cuthbertson scored in double digits adding 17 and 14 respectively.

The Buccaneers are now 18-10 on the season. The will travel on the road to Rockingham CC on Wednesday night for a conference game.

Women’s Basketball Wins 2 on Trip to Coast

The Buccaneers women’s basketball team took two games on the road this weekend as they traveled to the coast to play Brunswick CC and Cape Fear CC to stay undefeated on the season.

On Saturday they Bucs played the always tough Dolphins of Brunswick CC. The Bucs squeaked out a victory 52-48. They were led by Freshman Anika Jones and Kadesha Gibbs who both posted double doubles. Jones had a game high 20 points and 10 rebounds while Gibbs added 12 points and grabbed a game high 15 boards. Sophomore Matrice Sweezy dished out 6 assists in the winning effort.

On Sunday the Bucs played at Cape Fear CC, home of the Sea Devils. The Bucs struggled in the first half only scoring 28 but the Bucs defense was to much for the Sea Devils who could only muster 14 first half points. In the second half the Bucs exploded for 44 points to win the game 72-42. The Bucs were led by Kadesha Gibbs who scored 15. Freshman Anika Jones and Sophomore Matrice Sweezy added 14 and 13 respectively.

The Bucs now sit 26-0 on the season and 12-0 in the conference. The Bucs will travel on the road to play Guilford Tech on Tuesday for their 3rd game in 4 days.

Baseball Sweeps Double Header against CCBC Essex

The Buccaneers added a double header with Community College of Baltimore County Essex to their schedule.

Game 1:
Both the Catawba Valley Community College Buccaneers and CCBC Essex put runners aboard on Sunday, but it was the Catawba Valley Community College Buccaneers that were able to take advantage, pulling out a 5-3 win at Hickory.

CCBC Essex got eight hits compared with just seven for the Catawba Valley Community College Buccaneers, but CCBC Essex stranded six on base.

Zechariah Wiggs was hot from the plate for the Catawba Valley Community College Buccaneers. Wiggs went 2-3, drove in one and scored three runs. He singled in the fourth inning and homered in the sixth inning.

Robert Whaley recorded the win for the Catawba Valley Community College Buccaneers. He allowed three runs over seven innings. He struck out seven, walked three and surrendered eight hits.

In the bottom of the first, the Catawba Valley Community College Buccaneers grabbed the early lead, 1-0. A double by Blake Myers, plating Bryson Bowman started the inning off.

The game’s last lead went to the Catawba Valley Community College Buccaneers thanks to a fourth inning rally that saw one run cross the plate on an RBI double by Bowman.

Game 2:
A nine-run explosion in the first inning led the Catawba Valley Community College Buccaneers to a 14-0 win in seven innings over CCBC Essex at Hickory on Sunday.

Blake Myers racked up four RBIs on three hits for the Catawba Valley Community College Buccaneers. He doubled in the first inning and singled in the first and third innings.

Jordan Lafone recorded the win for the Catawba Valley Community College Buccaneers. He tossed three innings of shutout ball. Lafone struck out four, walked two and gave up one hit.

Men’s Basketball Runs Past Johnston CC for Sophomore Night

The Buccaneers Men’s team honored their sophomores with a 95-71 win over the Jaguars of Johnston CC. Sophomores Jalen Cannady, Isaiah Cuthbertson, Preston Earle, Anthony Hilliard, Victor Moore, and Terrance Polk were honored before the game, but once the game started it was a Freshman that took over the game. Going 6 for 9 from behind the arc Josh McClain scored 25 points with 17 coming in the first half. However, 4 of the 6 sophomores scored double digits with Anthony Hilliard logging a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists. Earle scored 21, Cannady 16, and Polk added 10 in the winning effort. Polk also led the team with 9 rebounds and 6 blocks.

The Bucs held a lead at half going into the locker room with a 45-36 lead. But the Jaguars came back in the second half tieing up the game with 13 minutes to go at 55-55, but the Bucs went on a 30-4 run in the next 7 minutes leading the Jaguars 80-59 with 5 minutes left to go in the game.

The Bucs are now 17-10 on the season and sit at 7-6 in the conference. The Buccaneers will head on the road tomorrow Sunday, February 24th to play Belmont Abbey JV in Charlotte, NC. The will return home for the Region X tournament on March 8th which will be hosted by CVCC.
