Women’s Basketball Climbs into Top 5
Feb 20th
In receiving the news Head Coach Tommy Edwards said, “I am excited for our players. The ranking is just reflective of how hard these young women have worked in practice and how they have bonded as a team for one goal. The Louisburg game was one of my most exciting games while at CVCC and was great to see the sophomores win their last home game. While we are excited to share this time with CVCC supporters and fans we know our job is not done.”
The team is not only ranked in the polls but sits in the top 10 of many stat categories of the NJCAA. The team is 6th in the nation scoring 77.9 points per game and making 30.3 field goals per game. They are 2nd in the nation shooting 46.8% while holding opponents to 31.7%, which ranks 6th in the nation. The team is also 9th in the nation making 14.9 FT per game. Freshman Anika Jones leads the team in scoring averaging 19.9 points per game, this also puts her at 8th in the nation with scoring. Jones is also shooting a team high 59.4% which ranks her 2nd in the nation. Sophomore Matrice Sweezy has the team high 138 assists which is 7th best in the nation. Sweezy is also 10th in the nation recording 87 steals in the season. Freshman Kadeshia Gibbs leads the team grabbing 8.5 rebounds per game and Sophomore Stephanie Cabral has recorded 50 charges on the season shattering the previous school record of 38, also held by Cabral.
“The ranking is something we are proud of, but our team realizes that it puts a bigger target on our back.” says Coach Edwards. “We were able to celebrate the win this weekend, but it is back to work and time to prepare for the next game.” The women will play the rest of the season on the road. They will play at Brunswick CC this Saturday, and at Cape Fear on Sunday.
