Women’s Basketball Wins 2 but Falls Short in Championship Game

The Women’s basketball concluded their best season ever with a loss in the NJCAA Region X tournament to Louisburg College 73-55. The Bucs played 3 tough battles but fell just short of claiming their first Region X championship.

In the first round the Bucs were able to defeat #8 seed Guilford Tech in an overtime game with a 69-65 score. The Bucs battled to a 58-58 tie at the end of regulation, but the Bucs offense was sparked in overtime and was able to outscore Guilford Tech 11 – 7 to clinch the win. The Bucs were led by Kadesha Gibbs who scored 22 points. Matrice Sweezy and Anika Jones added 11 and 10 points respectively.

In the Semifinal game the Bucs had to face a #4 Brunswick CC who battled the Bucs tough all season. The Bucs trailed at the half 23-31 but were able to get the offense going outscoring Brunswick 31-20 in the second half to garner a 54-51 win and advance to their first ever championship game.

In the championship game the Bucs had to face the #2 seed Louisburg College who is currently ranked 8th in the nation. The Bucs fought hard with in the first half to head in the locker rooms with a 26-25 lead. In the second half Louisburg College got hot from behind the arc and the Bucs offense struggled. Louisburg was able to end the game on a run and give the Bucs their first loss of the season 73-55. The Bucs were led by Matrice Sweezy who posted 18 points and Anika Jones who added 12.

The Bucs finish the season with an amazing 30-1 record and finished the regular season with an undefeated season of 28-0 and the Carolinas Virginia Conference Championship. For the NJCAA Region X awards the Bucs saw Anika Jones and Matrice Sweezy named to the First Team All-Region. The Bucs were also able to sweep the major awards with Anika Jones garnering the Player of the Year award and Head Coach Tommy Edwards win Coach of the Year.

Men’s Basketball Falls in Semifinals of Region X Tournament

The Buccaneers Men’s Basketball team fell in the semifinal game of the NJCAA Region X/District 6 championship this weekend to #1 Louisburg College by a score of 93-78.

In the first game of the tournament the #4 seeded Bucs faced the #5 seed Lenoir CC on Friday. The Bucs were able to lead the entire game and close out with a 89 – 66 win. The Bucs were led By Sophomore Terrence Polk who logged a double double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Josh McClain added 16 points in the win. Sophomores Preston Earle and Anthony Hilliard each logged 13 points in the winning effort. Hilliard added 5 assists to the win.

In the semifinal game on Saturday they Bucs had to face the #1 seed Louisburg College who is also ranked #1 in the nation in the current NJCAA polls. The Bucs had a slow start but battled back to be within 6 points in the second half. But Louisburg was able to convert free throws in the end and take home a 93-78 win.

The Bucs were led by freshman Josh McClain who dropped 24 points. Sophomores Preston Earle and Jalen Cannady each grabbed 7 rebounds and added 14 and 13 points respectively. Sophomore Anthony Hilliard also scored 13 points.

The Bucs finished the season with a 21-11 record the most wins of any Men’s Basketball team in the last 10 years of the program. Sophomores Anthony Hilliard and Preston Earle were named to the All-Region X second team.
