The Buccaneers baseball team swept the visiting Cougars from Wilkes Community College this weekend. Saturday saw a double header go to the Bucs 8-1 and 4-2 while the Bucs completed the sweep on Sunday winning 8-6. The Bucs are now 17-4 on the season and are 8-1 in conference play with 6 straight conference wins.

In Game one the Bucs saw Sophomore pitcher Robert Whaley shut down the Cougars bats by pitching all nine innings and striking out 11 batters and allowing only 1 run on 2 hits. This was Whaley’s sixth win on the season and he sits with a 6-1 record. The Bucs bats were led by Freshman Ryan Smith who went 4-5 in the game including a 3 run homerun in the second inning to break the game open for the Bucs. Smith finished with 4 rbi and 1 run in the game. Sophomore Christian Faust also helped in the win by driving in 2 rbi and scoring 2 runs.

Game two saw a tighter game with the Bucs squeaking out a 4-2 win. While Wilkes out hit the Bucs 6-1 the Bucs were able to capitalize on 3 Cougars errors and two sacrifice flies by Freshman Bryson Bowman to help gain the edge. Freshman Kurt Stabasefski had the lone Bucs hit and drove in 1 rbi and scored 1 run. Pitcher Jordan Lafone recorded the win (3-1) by pitching 4 innings and allowing 1 run on 4 hits. Freshman Dustin Greene came in the game and pitched the last 3 innings for the save and allowed only 1 run on 2 hits and struck out 6 batters faced.

In the final game on Sunday the Bucs were able to complete the sweep with a 8-6 win. Sophomore Blake Myers led the Bucs with a 3 run homerun in the 5th inning driving in the winning run and giving the Bucs a 7-3 lead over the Courgars. The Bucs bats were helped by Ryan Smith who was able to go 2-3 and drive in 2 rbi and score 1 run. Sophomore pitcher Blake Mosteller recorded his second win of the season going 5.2 innings and recording 3 strikeouts. Sophomore Aaron Sparks came in the game and grabbed the save for his first of the season.

The Bucs are on a 8 game win streak and will continue with an away game at Catawba College on Wednesday at 6:00pm and will return home to play Lenoir Rhyne at 3:00pm at home on Thursday.
