The NJCAA Headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo., released the names of the 2012-2013 NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards. The Catawba Valley Community College Buccaneers Student-Athletes saw three student-athletes honored, the most of any year. The NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards were previously known as NJCAA Academic All-American honors. The NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards honors student-athletes who have completed their Sophomore year with a high cumulative GPA. The NJCAA academic awards are:

  • NJCAA Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence (4.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale)
  • NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement (3.80 to 3.99 on a 4.00 scale)
  • NJCAA Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement (3.60 to 3.79 on a 4.00 scale)

The Bucs Baseball team saw two student-athletes named for Exemplary Academic Achievement with first baseman Ryan Karl and left-handed pitcher Aaron Sparks receiving the award. Aaron Sparks finished his career at CVCC with a 3.67 GPA. Sparks appeared in 10 games on the season throwing 13 strikeouts and posting a 2.60 era. Sparks will continue his college and baseball career at Emory and Henry University in Virginia. Ryan Karl finished his time at CVCC with a 3.79 GPA. Karl appeared in 29 games hitting 3 home runs and batting in 23 rbi. Karl also led the team with 11 doubles. Karl will continue his college and baseball career at Cornell University in New York this fall.

The Men’s Basketball team saw Sophomore guard Victor Moore named for Superior Academic Achievement with a 3.81 GPA. Moore appeared in 24 games while scoring 86 points and shooting 54.7% from the field. Moore will continue his college career at Appalachian State University where he received an Academic Scholarship for his academic success.
