The NJCAA has named Catawba Valley CC Women’s Volleyball sophomore student-athlete Leah Wells as Division II player of the week. This marks the first time a student-athlete at CVCC has been awarded this national award. Leah also currently serves on the Student Government Association as the Treasurer.
The #11 ranked Bucs went 3-0 over the last week including sweeping all 3 teams they played. During this time Leah Wells recorded 35 kills while posting a .361 hitting percentage. Leah scored 43 points in the three matches and recorded 16.5 points against Rockingham CC. Leah also stepped up defensively recording 31 digs in the three games.
On the season Leah is ranked in the top 50 of the nation with kills (275), Kills per set (2.93), and total attacks (736). Leah also ranks 55th in the nation with 323 points on the season. As a team the Bucs rank 2nd in the nation in kills per set (13.27), service aces per set (3.34), and points per set (18.4). The team ranks 4th nationally in total service aces (314) and 8th with a .274 hitting percentage. Of the 25 stats that the NJCAA records the Bucs are in the top 50 in 19 of the categories.
The #11 Bucs are 30-0 on the season and have only dropped 4 sets out of 94 total sets played this season. The Bucs are also sitting on a 61 game regular season winning streak with the last lost coming to Spartanburg Methodist at the end of the 2011 season. The final home game of this season will be against Spartanburg Methodist on October 26 at 10:00am. The Bucs will be on the road with two tri-matches this weekend and an away match on the 24th against Montreat College.
CVCC will be hosting this years Region X/District P volleyball tournament on Friday, November 1st and Saturday, November 2nd.
