Bucs Baseball Claims Third Straight League Championship
CVCC ATHLETICS – Over the weekend the Catawba Valley Bucs Baseball team clinched their third straight league title and the #1 seed in the upcoming Region X/Southeast District Tournament. The Bucs swept conference foe Rockingham Community College to finish with a 22-6 conference record, two games ahead of second place finisher Patrick Henry Community College.
In the latest poll the Bucs are currently ranked 16th and are ranked in the top 25 in 13 statistical categories including offensively being ranked 10th in total hits (520), 15th in team batting average (.327) and 17th in runs (336). Defensively the Bucs are ranked 3rd with 9 shutouts on the season, 7th with a 2.62 ERA, and 17th with opponents only hitting .261 against the Bucs.
The Bucs saw four players named to the NJCAA All-Region X team. Ivan Acuna, Bryson Bowman, and Colby Dishmond where placed on the first team, while Kurt Stabasefski was named to the second team.
Acuna, a freshman second baseman, hit .359 on the season with a .399 on base percentage. Acuna added 8 doubles, 37 runs, and 33 rbi on the season while posting a .906 fielding percentage at 2nd.
Bowman, a sophomore outfielder, led the team with 4 homeruns and 46 rbi on the season. Bowman hit .339 with a .393 on base percentage while adding a team high 15 stolen bases, 7 doubles, 3 triples, and scoring 41 runs on the season. Bowman posted a .987 fielding percentage in the outfield.
Dishmond, a sophomore catcher, led the team with 12 doubles on the season. He posted a .350 batting average with an impressive .433 on base percentage and .520 slugging percentage. Dishmond added 3 homeruns and scored 28 runs while knocking in 38 rbi.
Stabasefski, a sophomore shortstop, was second on the team with a .376 batting average and .455 on base percentage. Stabasefski knocked in 22 rbi while scoring a team best 53 runs while posting a .933 fielding percentage at shortstop.
The Bucs baseball team will play #8 Surry CC in the first round of the Region X/Southeast District tournament on Friday, May 9th at 7:00pm. This is a double elimination tournament with the winner claiming a spot in the NJCAA World Series in Enid, Oklahoma.
