Red Hawks re-write the records books in 2017-18

HICKORY, N.C. — Catawba Valley Community College sports teams capped off perhaps their single greatest year of overall athletic achievement during this past school year.

Forty-four school sports records were either broken or tied during the 2017-18 school year by Red Hawks athletic teams — the most in a single year in school history.

"In the five years I've been here, it's been exciting to watch our coaches take our teams to the next level," said Catawba Valley Athletic Director Nick Schroeder. "Our countless number of wins pale in comparison to the number of high quality student athletes who have donned the Red Hawk uniform."

Leading the way by either tying or setting 23 new program records in 20171-8 was the Red Hawks women's basketball program, including the most games played (32), points scored (2,597) and assists (587).

Catawba Valley's baseball program wasn't far behind, setting 18 new program marks, including wins in a season (42), runs scored (441), home runs (65), RBI (383) and walks drawn (284).

Individually, Red Hawks women's basketball player Shaniya Lester set or tied 13 records — the most of any Catawba Valley athlete this past school year.

Among the new marks that Lester set include the most games played in a season, most 2-point and total field goals made in a season, most total points in a season and the most games played in a career.

Seven CVCC sophomores set or tied multiple individual records, including women's basketball players Tory Agrusa (nine records) and Nikkyana McCaskill (six), baseball players Graham Mitchell (eight), Jimmy Marcelli (six) and Julian Smith (six) and men's basketball player Steve Ruszala (four).
