Men’s Basketball Game Highlights

2/29/12 CVCC vs. Guilford Tech CC he Catawba Valley Community College Buccaneers men’s basketball team ended their regular season Wednesday night with a 78-68 win over the visiting Guilford Technical Community College Titans.
CVCC (14-16, 8-8 NJCAA Division II Region X) was pressured into a number of early turnovers by Guilford (10-19, 4-11 Region X). The Titans took an 11-10 lead within the first 10 minutes on a layup by sophomore guard DeAndre Gandy after he forced a steal.
It would be their only lead of the game. Freshman guard-wing Preston Earle opened up CVCC’s lead to 30-16 on a 3-pointer with 3:52 left in the first half. The Buccaneers took a 37-29 lead into the locker room.
CVCC led by as many as 16 points in the second half, before Guilford returned to the full-court press in the closing minutes to help get within 10. But Titans freshman guard Sean Deniton, fouled while shooting a trey, missed all three free throws that would have cut the Buccaneers’ lead to eight points with 55.4 seconds left.
CVCC freshman guard Anthony Hilliard, with two free throws, and Guilford sophomore guard Ethan Joyce, with a 3-pointer, accounted for the game’s final points.
Earle had the first 10 points for the Buccaneers, and led all scorers with 27. Freshman point guard Terrence Polk was the team’s only other player in double figures, with 17 points. Polk was also the team’s leading rebounder, with eight boards.
Gandy paced Guilford with 22 points. The Titans had two other players in double figures: Freshman point guard Brendon Pennix with 14, and Deniton with 13. Pennix also led Guilford with seven rebounds.
CVCC plays again next week as the host team in the Region X District 15 tournament, to be held March 8-11. Their opponent, as well as the game date and time, have yet to be determined.

Will White led CVCC with 15 points, Anthony Hilliard followed with 14 points. Russell Crockett led Spartanburg Methodist with 16 points. CVCC goes back on the road again Saturday as they travel to Rockingham Community College.

2/6/12 CVCC vs. Guilford Tech CC CVCC Mens basketball team fell in a region 10 matchup against Guilford Tech Community College. Buccaneers were lead by Jalen Cannady and Anthony Hilliard with 12 points. GTCC was lead by Jack Joyce with 18 points on the night. Next game CVCC will be at home on Sunday Feb 12th against Pitt Community College at 3 p.m..

2/4/12 CVCC vs. Louisburg C The CVCC men’s basketball team won it’s 2nd game in less than 24 hours with a 78 to 73 win over Louisburg College. Both wins were over teams that came into the games in a tie for 1st place in region X. CVCC was led by Will White with 17 points. Zack Hayes followed with 15 points. Antar Johnson led Louisburg with 14 pts. CVCC was without one of the teams leading scorers Terrence Polk who was in the hospital with what is thought to be food poising. CVCC has improved from a 4 and 10 regular season start ( 0-4 region X) to 11 and 11 and (6-5 in region X play). The Buccaneers play Monday night at Guilford Tech in Greensboro in another region X contest.

2/3/12 CVCC vs. Lenoir CC CVCC men’s basketball team won it’s 6 game out of their last 7 with a 89 85 win over lenior Community College Friday night at CVCC. Lenoir came into the game in a 3 way tie for 1st in Region X play. Anthony Hilliard led CVCC with a career high 23 points. Isaiah Cuthbertson followed with 17 ponts and 15 rebounds. Jalen Cannidy had 14 points and 21 rebounds in the win. Marquez Jones led Lenoir with 24 points. CVCC has little time to enjoy the win as they face Louisburg College, who is now in a 2 way tie for first place, today (Saturday) at 3:00 P.M. at CVCC.

1/28/12 CVCC vs. Pitt CC CVCC Mens Basketball team overcame a 19 point defecit to beat Pitt Community College and give them there 2nd loss since the break with a score of 71-70 in a Region 10 matchup.. The Bucs were carried by Jalen Cannady with 31 points on the night… Will White had 12 points to go along with his 18 in last nights performance. Pitt was carried by Chris Mclawhorn with 14. CVCC next home game is Friday against Lenoir Community College @
7′ oclock.

1/22/12 CVCC vs. Wake Tech CC CVCC Men’s basketball team won it’s third straight game Sunday with an 80-63 win on the road vs Wake Tech C.C. CVCC was led in scoring by Terrence Polk with 19 points. Jalen Cannidy added 15 and Preston Earle followed with 10. Anthony Parrish led Wake tech with 22 points. CVCC goes on the road again Friday and Saturday visiting Lenoir C.C and Pitt Community College.

1/19/12 CVCC vs. Patrick Henry CC CVCC defeated Patrick Henry Community College in a region X game Thursday night by a score of 100 to 75. Patrick Henry came in to the game undefeated in Region X play. The win is CVCC’s 2nd straight region win. CVCC was led by Justin Lail’s 19 points. Will White and Anthon Hilliard both added 15 pts. Terrence Polk added 14 pts and 16 rebounds. Patrick Henry was led by Ed Jenkins with 22pts. CVCC plays on the road this Saturday at Vance Granville C.C. and at Wake Tech on Sunday afternoon to complete a string of 5 games in 9 days.

1/17/12 CVCC vs. Rockingham CC CVCC defeated Rockingham Community College in a region 10 contest by the score of 90-89. CVCC was lead by Freshman Preston Earle with 19 points. Jalen Cannady and Will white both added 18. Rockingham was lead by Ty Dabbs with 28 points.

1/14/12 CVCC vs. Johnson CC CVCC Men’s basketball team lost at home to Jonhston C.C. on Saturday 89to 78. CVCC was led by Will White with 24 pts. Justin lail added 16. Johnston was led by eric Dunn with 24 pts. CVCC plays at home Tuesday vs Rockingham at 7:00.


12/20/11 CVCC vs Sandhills CCCVCCMen’s basketball conclude the first semester with a 86-76 loss to Sandhills Community College at CVCC Tuesday evening. CVCC trailed by 10 at the half and could
not get any closer in the second half. Sandhills is now 15 and 1 and ranked 4th in the country. Will White and Terence Polk led CVCC with 18 pts each. Derrick Townes led Sandhills with 19. CVCC’s next game will be at home on Jan 7 vs Region X foe Wake Tech Community College. The men will play at 2:00 and the women will also play Wake Tech at 4:00.

12/9/11 Bucs vs Wytheville CC CVCC came out strong and built up a 17 pt half time lead using a balanced offensiveattack.  In the second half, Wytheville came out on fire, taking advantage of CVCC turnovers and dropping in 3 pt
shots almost at will. With 30 seconds remaining in the game, Wytheville took the lead by one. Fortunately for the Buccaneers, Justin Lail hit a 15 ft jumper with five seconds remaining and Wytheville C.C. missed a
desperation jumper as the buzzer sounded. Will White lead CVCC with 20 pts, Preston Earle added 18 pts and Jalen Cannady put in 16. Jason Brothers scored 29 for Wytheville
C.C..
12/6/11  Bucs vs Caldwell CC & TI
CVCC lost on the road to Caldwell Community College 102 to 84. Caldwell shot very well and hurt CVCC on the offensive boards. Thir pressure defense also created a lot of turnovers for the buccanners. Austin Bennit for Caldwell led
both teams with 28 pts. Preston Earle led CVCC with 18

12/3/12  CVCC vs Louisburg College
CVCC lost to 13th ranked Louisburg College Saturday afternoon 99 to 89.  It was CVCC’s 4th road game out of the last 6. CVCC’s poor free throw shooting on Saturday was costly. They only made 25 of 44 free throws. Will White led CVCC
with 25 pts, Justin Lail followed with 16. Tim Robinson led Louisburg with 25.

11/30/11  CVCC vs Spartanburg Methodist
Our guys were up by 3 points with two minutes remaining in the game but Spartanburg took advantage of a couple of key CVCC turnovers resulting in a SMC victory, 68-65. Terrence Polk led CVCC with 15 pts. Jalen Cannady and Will White added 11 each. Spartanburg Methodist was led by Jeff Pendarvis with

CVCC lost to Jefferson Davis Community College Thursday afternoon in Tallahassee FL.
The final score was 75 to 71. CVCC was led by Terrence Polk with 18 pts.
Jefferson Davis was led by Lamont Jackson who had 34.
CVCC plays at home on Wednesday Nov 30 against Spartanburg Methodist College at 7:00 PM

11/23/11  CVCC Men’s Basketball fell to Host Tallahassee Community

College in the TCC Thanksgiving tournament tonight by a score of86-69. CVCC led
the host team 38 35 at the half. CVCC trailed by 5 with 5 and a half minutes to
go in the game before TCC broke the game open with some key defensive plays.
CVCC was led in scoring by Will White with 15. Justin Lail added 13 and Jalen
Cannady 10. TCC was led by Christian Farmer with 26 pts. CVCC plays JeffersonDavis Community College from Alabama tomorrow at 3:00 pm

11/19/11 Men’s Basketball vs Johnston Community College
CVCC Men’s basketball team lost at Johnston Community College Saturday 87 to 80. CVCC jumped out to a 17 pt lead and saw it shrink to 5 at the half. Foul trouble and turnovers cost the
Buccaneers again.  Donald Johnson led CVCC with 27 pts.  Will White followed him with 19 pts. Derrick Dunn led Johnston with 31 pts.
CVCC is now 3-2. They play next in Tallahassee Fl at Tallahassee Community College’s Thanksgiving tournament. CVCC plays Tallahassee on Wednesday at 7:00 and Jefferson Davis Community College from Alabama on Thursday at 3:00 PM

11/14/11 Men’s Basketball vs Montreat JV
CVCC improved to 3 and 1 with a 93-75 road win over Montreat College JV’s on Monday night. CVCC battled foul trouble most of the night but was able to break the game open in the last 9 minutes.
Will White led CVCC with 15 pts. Donald Johnson added 14, Emmanual McClain 12,Terrence Polk 11 and Jalen Cannidy 10 Jeff Smith led Montreat with a game high 30 pts.
CVCC opens region play on Saturday at Johnston Community College.
11/12/11 Men’s Basketball vs Whytheville Community College
CVCC Men’s basketball lost there 1st road game of the season Saturday to Whytheville Community College. The final score was 85 to 82. CVCC saw a 15 point lead and three separate 10 pt leads dissolve as they sent Wytheville to the foul line for 30 free throws.
CVCC was lead by Will White with 17 pts. Jalen Canndiy added 12, followed by 11 for Isiah Cuthbertson and 10 for Terrence Polk.
Wytheville was led by Eddie Brothers 23 pts.
CVCC Plays Tuesday at Montreat College.
