CVCC men’s hoops to participate in Summer Showcase

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball program is set to participate in Men's Basketball Summer Showcase hosted by the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) and Wallace State Community College this weekend.

The Showcase, which takes place June 28-30 on Wallace State's campus in Hanceville, Ala., features 48 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) men's basketball teams.

Red Hawks men's basketball head coach Bryan Garmroth said the Red Hawks were invited to the Showcase via email.

"I thought it would be good to get our team together since they normally never get together before August," Garmroth said. "I thought it would really be good for our sophomores. All of the freshmen, but one are going. Hopefully, they can get to go down there and play well in front of some coaches."

This past January, the NJCAA changed its rules, permitting summer practices and competitions from June 16 to July 1.

During weekend competitions, coaches from the NCAA Division I, II and II levels and the NAIA can visit with NJCAA programs to recruit student athletes.

A group of 15 Catawba Valley men's basketball players, including three Red Hawks sophomores — Byron Sanders, Sal-Bey Young and Jahleer Black — will attend the Showcase.

The Red Hawks will play four games during the Showcase, including one on Friday and three on Saturday.

While getting his players recruited will be the main point of emphasis, Garmroth believes the Showcase will serve a dual purpose for his team.

"They are all getting to know each other," Garmroth said of his players. "The freshmen are all getting to know each other. They will find out the different level of intensity that they are going to have to play at. When they come back here in August and we start practice, they'll know that this isn't like high school. It's hard to convince them how hard they have to work in September and October."

Practicing three days per week during this two-week window allowed by the NJCAA has also helped Garmroth's group heading into the 2019-20 season this winter.

"They've never practiced together before August," Garmroth said. "It gets the guys in here, and they can meet together and play a little bit. The whole idea is maybe they can grasp the intensity level that they are going to have to go to. That's the biggest thing and that they get to know each other a little bit easier."

Admission to the Men's Basketball Summer Showcase is $10/day.
