Red Hawk softball signs Florida standout Josie McCrea

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College softball program is reaching to "The Sunshine State" for the latest addition to its first-year team.

The Red Hawks have signed Booker High School (Fla.) standout Josie McCrea to its inaugural recruiting class starting this fall.

First-year Catawba Valley softball coach Josh Bumgarner discovered McCrea through a recruiting website, and he was immediately impressed by the right-handed pitcher and reached out to her.

"Josie is a hard worker and extremely competitive," Bumgarner said. "She wants to win every time she's on the field. She gives us another arm in the circle to help solidify our pitching staff. We have high expectations for Josie and look forward to getting her on the field soon."

A three-year varsity standout at Booker, McCrea led the Tornadoes to 11 wins this past spring, including a perfect 8-0 record in 5A District 11 play for the first time in 25 years.

McCrea started her senior season in February by striking out a school record 19 batters during the Tornadoes' first game of the spring against St. Petersburg Northside Christian School.

She finished her senior season with 208 strikeouts in 112 innings pitched.

At the plate this past spring, McCrea tallied a .527 batting average with 52 hits (nine doubles, three triples, one home run), 15 runs scored and 14 RBIs. She also recorded a .629 on-base percentage and a .854 slugging percentage.

During her junior and senior seasons at Booker, McCrea won 17 games on the mound, striking out 289 batters in 167 innings pitched while also recording a .981 fielding percentage. She also tallied a .517 batting average with 46 hits, 22 runs scored and 32 RBI during those two seasons.

McCrea joins a group of 16 signees for the first-ever season of Red Hawk softball, which starts championship contention in the spring of 2020.
