CVCC volleyball program continues to give back to local athletes

HICKORY, N.C. — Head coach Shannon Hudson and the Catawba Valley Community College volleyball program are at Concordia Christian Day School in Conover this week working with young athletes in the fifth through eighth grade.

The team camp is the second one on the road so far this summer. Hudson, assistant coach Mark Wimberley and both former and current CVCC volleyball players worked with campers at West Stokes High School earlier this month.

The Red Hawks also held several individual skill camps on their campus at the Tarlton Complex last month.

Hudson said the focus on camp this week is on getting each player ready for their upcoming season.

"We kind of started with skill development and moved it into how we incorporate that into game play," she said. "It's been a lot of fun watching them progress from the beginning of the week until now. Tomorrow, we'll have a lot of team play the last day of camp. We've been at it since Monday, and then it ends tomorrow, which is Thursday. This is our third camp that we've done this year, so it's been a lot of fun."

Campers have been working with Hudson and her camp staff from 8-11 a.m. since Monday at Concordia.

Hudson, who is 250-51 as the head volleyball coach at CVCC, said the goal of each of the team camps has varied.

"Each of the coaches kind of have a different goal for what they are looking for in the camp," she said. "At CVCC, we have a few camps that focus on skills, and then we have an elite camp. Those have different goals. For the team camps that we go on location to do, it just really depends on what the coach needs and what they are looking for with their program. We always touch on the skills because you can't get too much of that. By the end of the week, we hope to kind of be incorporating things that their team can actually use for this upcoming season."

This weekend, the program is holding another team camp at West Caldwell High School.

"We're looking forward to that one, too," Hudson said of the team camp of this weekend.

Coming off their best season in program history, the Red Hawks kick off their 2017 volleyball season on Thursday, Aug. 17 with a home scrimmage against Bob Jones University and Montreat College.
