PREVIEW: Experience will help Red Hawks in Florida

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — With four wins and tournament experience under its belt, the Catawba Valley Community College volleyball program continues its tough early-season schedule today during the Pasco-Hernando Bobcat Invitational.

CVCC didn't play in last year's Bobcat Invitational due to Hurricane Irene, so this will be the first time in two seasons that the Red Hawks have participated in the event.

"Pasco is another great tournament for us," said Catawba Valley Community College head volleyball coach Shannon Hudson. "We will see amazing competition and will get the chance to play Pasco, who is currently ranked eighth. It's another good indicator to see where we are as a team. We've made a few small adjustments from last weekend that I feel will make a big impact on the court."

The Red Hawks (4-2, 1-0 in Region X) started their road trip on Wednesday with a dominant 3-0 victory in conference play against USC Salkehatchie in Allendale, S.C.

After traveling late Wednesday to Florida, CVCC players and coaches had an off day from competition on Thursday that included a team bonding trip to Disney World's Animal Kingdom.

Catawba Valley returns to the court on Friday for two tough matches against Division I opponent Indian River State College (Fla.) and Division II St. Johns River State College (Fla.). Both teams of these teams are a part of Region 8.

On Saturday, CVCC once again faces off with eighth-ranked Pasco-Hernando, a traditional rivalry that typically culminated in the final match of the season during the District P championship match with one of the two squads earning an National Junior College Athletic Association Division II National Tournament berth.

However, due to changes in the District tournaments, both teams have the opportunity to earn a spot at the D-II National Tournament in Charleston, W.Va. — if Catawba Valley (representing District O) and Pasco-Hernando (representing District P) can win their respective districts.

Saturday's match marks the first of two meetings between the Red Hawks and Bobcats, who will also meet on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Valley Invitational hosted by Catawba Valley Community College at the Tarlton Complex.

The final match for Catawba Valley in the Bobcat Invitational is another tough match up with Region 6's Kansas City Kansas Community College — a team that is 7-2 so far on the season and currently ranked No. 17 in Division II.
