CVCC's final home volleyball scrimmage a success

HICKORY, N.C. — Saturday's final home spring scrimmage tournament was a huge success for the Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team. With 10 rising sophomores and three incoming freshmen for fall 2019, it is the youngest spring roster in program history. The Red Hawks were also missing two starters from last year's ninth-place national finishing squad due to injuries.

In attendance for the annual tournament were Belmont Abbey College, Lenoir-Rhyne University, Guilford College, UNC Pembroke and Catawba College.

Rising sophomore Macy Pope led in aces with five, and incoming freshman Brooke Falowski was the most efficient server with no errors and an outstanding 2.0 server rating.

Abigail Gordon was the team leader for the Red Hawks in passing with a 2.28 on 18 attempts, and Bre Myers was right behind controlling the ball with 2.25 on a staggering 81 attempts.

On the attack, Emma Clark was on point hitting extremely efficient at .371 with 54 kills on 105 attempts. Sage Harrington followed with a .272 with 46 kills on 117 attempts.

Harrington also posted five block solos and 15 assists, along with Clark's three block solos and seven block assists. Adding to the block category, Anna Clarke recorded 10 block assists.

In the setting category for the Hawks, Pope topped with 73 assists and Dulaney Stoney had 25.

Bre Myers (35 digs) and Meredith Patterson (31 digs) led the Red Hawks defensively.

The Red Hawks dominated the day, running their offense with nearly perfect team passing (2.02 receive rating) and a team hitting percentage of .180.

The CVCC vollebyall team returns to spring action at Western Carolina University on April 13.
