The Red Hawks Men's Basketball team took to the road for the first two rounds of the Region X DII NJCAA Men's Basketball tournament hosted by Richard Bland College in Petersburg, VA. The Red Hawks entered the tournament as the #6 seed with a 9-10 conference record and took on the #11 seeded Storm from Tidewater Community College.
In the first game of the tournament the Red Hawks jumped out to a quick early lead and never relequished the lead for the rest of the game beating the Storm 74-62. The Red Hawks were led by Mon'Darius Black who posted a double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Freshman, Cournelius Johnson and JaQuaez Jackson each scored in the double figures with 15 and 11 respectively.
With the win the Red Hawks faced the #3 seed Bobacats from Bryant & Stratton, who were ranked 13th in the NJCAA polls.
The Red Hawks fell to the third seed Bobcats 72-74 in a last second heart breaker. The Red Hawks jumped out to a slow start being outscored 18-5 in the first ten minutes of the game. However after a technical foul on Head Coach, Bryan Garmroth, the Red Hawks jumped back into the game with a 14-0 run in the next 4 minutes. The lead went back and forth 3 times in the final 6 minutes. The game was tied 30-30 but Bryant & Stratton hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer for a 33-30 lead at half.
The second half saw the same tight paced game with the largest lead being 6 for the Bobcats. With 19 seconds to go the Red Hawks trailed the Bobcats 70-72. Tryle Poindexter drove to the lane and was hit at the basket. With no foul called the Bobcats were able to rebound the ball and where immediately fouled by Seth Martin. The Bobcats missed both foul shots and Poindexter drove for a final bucket to cut the lead to 72-74.
The Red Hawks were led by Tryle Poindexter who scored 33 points including 19 of the points in the second half. Seth Martin and Trevin Miller both added 11 in the loss. Miller who was playing in his final game as a Red Hawk scored all 11 points in the 2nd half. Cornelius Johnson and Mon'Darius Black each grabbed 7 rebounds.
The Red Hawks finish the season 15-16 and 10-11 in the conference. Jamarcus Eison and Trevin Miller were the two lone sophomores who played their last game with CVCC.
