The Red Hawks fell short in the championship game to #1 seed and regular season champion Louisburg College 63-78. This game capped off an amazing 23-9 season for the Red Hawks. The 23 wins is a new program best for a basketball season toping 21 wins previously set by a Garmroth team in 2012/13.
The Red Hawks finished the season with a 14-4 conference record, including a 6-1 record for the month of February. The Red Hawks finished tied for second in the conference with Patrick Henry CC. With a tiebreaker going to Patrick Henry the Red Hawks were placed as the #3 team in the Region X/District tournament giving the Red Hawks a bye in the first round.
In the second round of the tournament the Red Hawks took on #6 seed Pasco-Hernando SC (FL). The Red Hawks were able to run past Pasco 113-77. While leading 46-35 at half the Red Hawks kept the foot on the gas scoring 67 points in the second half. The Red Hawks were led by freshman, Matthew Powell, who posted a game high 22 points. Sophomore Kenny Lemmon added a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomores Mon'Darius Black and Cornelius Johnson each added 14 points. Black also dished out 8 assists while logging 3 steals.
With the win over Pasco the Red Hawks were setup to face #2 seed Patrick Henry CC who they had split with in the regular season with each team winning at home and both games being decided by less than 3 points. The Red Hawks were able to jump on Patrick Henry early and outlasted the Patriots of PHCC yo take a 76-72 victory setting up the Red Hawks first appearance in the District title game in Division II competition with #1 seed Lousiburg.
In the championship game Louisburg came out strong and was able to jump on the Red Hawks by taking a 25-43 lead into the half. However, the Red Hawks did not quite and playing hard were able to outscore Lousiburg in the second half however the team could never make up the difference from the first half. Johnson led the Red Hawks with 20 points, while Black poured in 15 points. Lemon also added double digit points with 12 while sophomore JaQueaz Jackson grabbed a team high 11 rebounds.
The loss ended the Red Hawks season and saw seven sophomores end their career accomplishing program best in DII basketball with wins and an appearance in the District Championship game. The Red Hawks will look to return a strong freshman class next year with 7 players who saw time in the Region X/District Tournament.
