Men's Basketball Open Season with Strong 74-71 Win Over Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. (Nov. 2) — The Red Hawks launched their 2025-26 men's basketball season with an impressive 74-71 road victory over Newberry College's developmental team on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Hawks controlled the first half, building a 42-35 lead, and maintained their edge through a competitive second half to secure the win. CVCC shot 38.9 percent from the field and converted 14 of 22 free throws while dominating the glass with 40 rebounds.

Freshman guard TJay Mills led the way with 20 points, hitting 6 of 11 shots and going 8-for-9 from the line. Mills also added an assist and a rebound in 16 minutes off the bench. KJ Burke scored 9 points, including a 3-pointer, and Bryson Bowman contributed 7 points and a team-high 7 rebounds. Brennan Oldham added 8 points and 6 rebounds, and Jordan Lineberger chipped in 8 points and 3 steals.

The Red Hawks attacked the paint for 38 points and capitalized on turnovers to fuel their offense. Their depth was evident, with multiple players contributing key minutes and production.

CVCC returns home Tuesday, Nov. 4, for its first game at the Tarlton Complex against the Lees-McRae developmental team at 6:00 pm.
