The Catawba Valley Red Hawks hosted Surry Community College for the first match of the two day Region X Extravaganza at 1:00 on Friday, September 5, 2014. The Red Hawks came out hot and won three straight sets 25-15, 25-15 and 25-19.
Leading the way in the kill category for Catawba Valley was Aimee Cloninger with 11 kills for the match, followed by Anna Henderson with 8 kills and Rachel Anderson with 7. Libero Katelyn Houser controlled the defense with 22 digs. Aimee Cloninger contributed 14 digs, Rachel Anderson had 13 digs and Madison Pogue added 9 digs against the Surry Knights. Madison Pogue ran the offense with 26 assists for the match and also had 2 aces. Also dominating in the serving category was Aimee Cloninger with 3 aces and Hannah Griffin and Rachel Anderson who added 2 aces each. Anna Henderson had 2.5 blocks and Rachel Anderson and Aimee Cloninger added 1 block each.

Immediately after the CVCC – Surry match, the Red Hawks took on the Davidson County Community College Storm. The intensity from the previous match continued and Catawba Valley dominated the first set 25-8. The predominantly freshman line-up in the second set of the match pulled out a close 27-25 victory and the Red Hawks pushed to finish the final set 25-18. Again, Aimee Cloninger led in kills with 6 for the match followed by Anna Henderson with 5, and Taylor Offnick and Madison Pogue with 4 each. Katie Ruff controlled the defense with 9 digs, and Katelyn Houser, Montana Moore and Emily Horn all had 7 digs each. In the assists category Madison Pogue led the way with 13 and Kristen Moore added an impressive 10. Aces were led by Aimee Cloninger with 4. Anna Henderson and Madison Pogue had 2.5 and 1 blocks respectively.

In the final match of the night, CVCC played the Brunswick Community College Dolphins, winning in three straight sets 25-11, 25-19 and 25-6. Sharing kills were Aimee Cloninger with 6, Emily Horn with 4, and Anna Henderson and Taylor Offnick with 3 each. Katelyn Houser and Aimee Cloninger had 7 digs each for the match and Liza Sipe added 6. Madison Pogue led in assists and aces with 11 assists and 4 aces for the match. Montana Moore also had 4 aces against the BCC Dolphins. Anna Henderson posted 3.5 blocks for the match and Emily Horn added 1.

In the second day of the Region X Extravaganza competition, the Catawba Valley Red Hawks took on conference rival Cape Fear for a 10:30 match. The Red Hawks set the tempo early in the match and maintained control to sweep the CFCC Sea Devils 25-17, 25-21 and 25-13. Leading the way for the Lady Red Hawks was sophomore powerhouse Aimee Cloninger who posted 14 kills, 11 digs and 3 aces for the match. Also contributing in the kill category was Rachel Anderson with 8 kills, Emily Horn with 6 kills and Anna Henderson with 5. Libero Katelyn Houser had 25 digs for the match and also aced 2 serves along with teammates Rachel Anderson and Montana Moore. The blocking game was strong for CVCC with Anna Henderson leading the way with 2 total blocks. Rachel Anderson, Tiffany Brooks and Emily Horn all added 1.5 total blocks each.

The Lady Red Hawks lost focus as they faced Pitt Community College in a Saturday afternoon match-up. Sloppy play and unforced errors almost cost Catawba Valley the first and second sets of the match, but they cleaned up play to win in three 25-22, 25-22 and 25-15. Kills were led by Aimee Cloninger who posted 11 for the match. Anna Henderson had 8 kills and Tiffany Brooks added 6. Aimee Cloninger also led in the dig category with 12 followed by Katelyn Houser with 11 digs and Rachel Anderson with 10. Madison Pogue and Kristen Moore shared assists with 26 and 10 respectively. Hannah Griffin's serve was hot and she aced 2 for the match. Madison Steed and Anna Henderson each had a block for the match.

In their last match of the Region X Extravaganza, Catawba Valley faced the Wake Tech Eagles. CVCC started off slow, but rallied from behind to win the first set 25-23. In the second and third sets, The Lady Red Hawks stepped up their game to win 25-17 and 25-16. Sophomore captains Aimee Cloninger and Anna Henderson led the offensive game for the Red Hawks with 11 and 9 kills respectively with the help of their co-captain Madison Pogue who put up 26 assists for the match. Rachel Anderson and Tiffany Brooks also contributed offensively with 5 kills each. In the dig category Katelyn Houser led the way with 15 digs for the match and also led in aces with 3. Madison Pogue offered 10 digs and Aimee Cloninger, Rachel Anderson and Montana Moore all had 6 digs each.
The Red Hawks overall record is 11-2 and their conference record is 5-0.

Catawba Valley is home again on Tuesday, September 9th against NJCAA Division 1 competitor Spartanburg Methodist College at 6:00.
