Red Hawks wrap up inaugural CV Clash with a split

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College softball program finished its inaugural Catawba Valley Clash on Saturday with a split in its final two games of the event.

The Red Hawks record now stands at 3-1 overall.

Montreat 8, CVCC 7 (eight innings)

For the second-straight day, the Red Hawks battled in extra innings, but came up short this time in a one-run loss to the Cavaliers.

Third baseman Alleigh Himes led Catawba Valley offensively, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run, double, two RBI and three runs scored.

Red Hawk outfielders Lillie Pennington and Laynie Hudgins added two hits and an RBI each.

Cali Hinnant and Payton Goble combined to five up only three earned runs in the contest and strike out a combined eight batters.

CVCC 9, Cleveland 0 (forfeit)

The Red Hawks raced out to a nine-run lead before both coaches agreed to end the contest after the fourth inning due to field and travel conditions.

The game was cancelled before it was official due to weather and possible hazardous travel conditions.

Catawba Valley took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Cali Hinnant's double brought home Lillie Pennington.

CVCC added to its lead in the second and third innings, scoring four runs in each of those innings.

Alleigh Himes' two-run home run to left field and Payton Goble's two-RBI double highlighted a four-run second inning.

Hayley Morrow added a two-run double of her own in the third inning and Savannah Nolan also had an RBI double in the stanza.

The CVCC softball team returns to action on Friday for a home doubleheader against the Brevard JV team. First pitch at the Highland Rec Center in Hickory is set for 2 p.m.
