HICKORY AND SHELBY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College softball team went 4-0 during its games this past weekend, outscoring its opponents 42-6 during the process.
Catawba Valley 5, USC Union 0
Behind a pair of home runs from Emma Kuproski and Cora Olivares and a two-hit pitching performance from Cali Hinnant, the Red Hawks took the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Bantams.
Kaylee Yoder and Olivares both tallied a team-high two hits for the Red Hawks. Olivares also drove in a team-best two RBI, and Yoder stole a team-leading three bases.
Hinnant improved to 13-2 on the mound in her two-hit performance, allowing just three walks and striking out eight batters.
Catawba Valley 9, USC Union 1
Behind a four-RBI performance from Emma Kuproski, the Red Hawks completed the sweep of the Bantams on Friday afternoon with an eight-run victory at Highland Recreation Center Field 4.
All four RBI for Kuproski came on a fifth-inning grand slam. Jessica Cannon and Kaylee Yoder added a team-high two hits for the Red Hawks in the victory. Cannon drove one two RBI, while Yoder, Lillie Pennington and Payton Thomas all drove in one run each.
On the mound, Catawba Valley starting pitcher Jillian Jones improved to 11-0 on the season. She allowed five hits, one unearned run and struck out two batters in her complete game pitching performance.
Catawba Valley 15, Cleveland 0
The Red Hawks tallied 18 hits, including a home runs by Kaylee Yoder, Lillie Pennington and Cali Hinnant, to run-rule the Yetis in game one of the set.
Of those 18 hits, nine of them were extra base hits, including a pair of doubles off the bat of Cora Ollivares and a double each from Emma Kuproski, Kiana Mullner, Pennington and Hinnant.
Hinnant earned the win on the mound. She allowed just five Cleveland hits and no runs while walking just one and striking out three.
Catawba Valley 13, Cleveland 5
The Red Hawk offense stayed hot in game two of Saturday's doubleheader recording 16 hits, including three each from Kaylee Yoder, Jessica Cannon and Cali Hinnant, in an eight-run victory against the Yetis.
Catawba Valley scored in every inning of the contest, including three runs in the first inning, four in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Emma Kuproski, Grace Andrews and Hinnant each tallied home runs in the game, while Jessica Cannon recorded a triple.
Kuproski had a team-best four RBI. Cannon, Hinnant and Kiana Mullner drove in two runs each, while Lillie Pennington, Cora Olivares and Grace Andrews all tallied one RBI apiece.
Jillian Jones earned the win on the mound for the Red Hawks. She allowed six hits, three runs, one walk and struck out eight batters to improve to 12-0 on the season.
The Catawba Valley Community College softball team returns to action this Saturday for a doubleheader against Patrick & Henry. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Highland Recreation Center Field 4.
